TSW Architecture: Renovation and New Addition Designs

During the great slowdown of the last couple of years, TSW Architecture has been helping young families grow their homes on the Westside. 

The three projects featured here are all in the Underwood Hills neighborhood, just west of I-75 and a very short drive from the popular retail shops and restaurants found at the White Provision live/work/play district. 

Each of these home renovations approaches upgrades and expansion in different ways. 15 White Street takes the roof off and goes up a floor; 1843 Claremont re-images the tiny cottage with a new large front porch and a spacious addition on the rear; and 1187 Mantissa focuses on interior renovations and the creation of a new romantic façade.

15 White Street: Entertaining had always been cramped for this family. TSW designed a second story addition which doubled the square footage by moving all private areas upstairs, leaving the downstairs with a greatly expanded kitchen, dining and family room. Exterior details on the expansion were carefully carried over from the house’s historic bungalow style.

1843 Claremont Street: The high-ceiling addition to the rear of this small cottage doubled the square footage to 2600 and created a light-filled expansive kitchen and retreat area. Two bedrooms and baths were also added. The new large front porch, and the home’s exterior, is designed in a rustic Greek Revival style.

1187 Mantissa Street: TSW showed the owners (a young family) how their living, dining, and kitchen areas could be significantly improved with only modest “bump-out” expansions. As importantly, the design work provided plans for a future upper level expansion for new bedrooms, baths, and a home office. The new exterior face lift builds from romantic cottage precedents found nearby.
