City of Hapeville's Comprehensive Revitalization Program Receives ARC's 2006 CREATE Community Award

The CREATE Community Awards salute outstanding local government initiatives to achieve regional goals in the areas of community involvement, regional prosperity, educational excellence, air quality and transportation and environmental sustainability.

The City of Hapeville received the 2006 CREATE Community Award for its Comprehensive Revitalization Program. The program, which grew out of a 2005 Livable Centers Initiative Study, which was done by TSW, is helping the community attract new investment.

Local officials are taking a proactive approach to dealing with the closing of the Ford Motor Company plant. Residential zoning has been modified, and increased densities serve as an incentive for investing in transitional neighborhoods.

The new design code, also completed by TSW, establishes minimum standards for all new residential, commercial and mixed-use construction. Already, Hapeville is working on a $300-500 million mixed-use redevelopment of the Old Fourth Ward, called Olde Town, which will bring 1,200 new single-family housing units into the city.
