An extensive examination of the U.S. 278 corridor currently
is under way. The final result will be a comprehensive plan for
implementation and funding that links transportation issues with
land use.
The city of Covington and the Newton County Board of Commissioners
are working with the Atlanta Regional Commission and the consulting
firms of Tunnell-Spangler-Walsh, Marketek, and URS to produce
the Livable Cities Initiative Study. The Center for Community
Preservation and Planning also is heavily involved with the study.
“The LCI study is a big step toward alleviating some
of the traffic issues,” Varner said. “With better
planned routes we can get some of those cars onto alternative
roads. Planning is going to be key.”
