UPCOMING EVENTS

CNUThe Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) is holding its 18th annual event in Atlanta with assistance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This is the first time that CNU has collaborated with the CDC and focused so extensively on the relationship between the built environment and public health.

TSW has taken on a significant leadership role in the preparation of Congress activities. Founding Principal Bill Tunnell will moderate a breakout session called Where do we go from Here? Rethinking Stalled Suburban Development, which will examine new ways to convert unfinished neighborhoods into more walkable mixed-use communities. TSW Senior Principal Caleb Racicot, CNU Atlanta Executive Chair, will present a session on applying form-based codes in real-life development situations. TSW Principal Adam Williamson will lead a tour of Marietta and Woodstock’s revitalized historic downtowns.

Rebekah Calvert, TSW marketing director, coordinated the production and design of Building Metropolitan Atlanta: Past, Present & Future, the essential reference and guidebook for those attending the Congress, featuring 27 perspective articles covering regional topics and over 70 local smart growth communities and future projects advancing New Urbanist design principles. Woody Giles, a planner at TSW, also worked on the book production and has played a significant role in publicizing its release.  Finally, TSW Principal Christopher Leerssen will lead a walking tour of the Beltline.

CNU BOOK

CNU Book Cover

TSW staff members have been instrumental in developing the Building Metropolitan Atlanta: Past, Present & Future, which is a comprehensive look at the region’s evolution, its current challenges, and the many recent and planned efforts to address them. For anyone attending CNU 18, it’s an essential reference and guide to this complex and fast-changing metropolis.

Essays in the book’s opening Perspectives section address overarching themes such as Atlanta as a mega-region; calculating health impacts of a major infrastructure project; agricultural urbanism; lifelong communities; and reviving the center city. Perspectives authors include Dr. Howard Frumkin, special assistant to the CDC director for climate change and health; Catherine Ross, director of Georgia Tech’s Center for Quality Growth and Regional Development; Lawrence Frank, formerly at Georgia Tech and now holder of the Bombardier Chair in Sustainable Transportation Systems at the University of British Columbia; and Christopher Leinberger of the Brookings Institution.

The book also profiles several dozen historic and still (or once again) thriving towns and neighborhoods, and to describe more than 40 recent and planned Atlanta area projects that embody the principles of sustainability and new urbanism.
